Tips to Getting Rid of Mosquitoes in Southern California

If you find it impossible to enjoy a quiet evening outside without being eaten alive, you may have a mosquito problem. They are not just annoying, they can be dangerous too. So what’s the trick to getting rid of mosquitoes?

More than half of all vector borne diseases such as Zika, Malaria, and Dengue are caused by mosquitoes. This makes it imperative for you to take the necessary steps to keep your home free of these unwelcome pests and to safeguard the health of your loved ones.

Do You Have a Mosquito Home Invasion?

There is a pretty good chance you are dealing with a mosquito infestation if there is standing water around your property and the temperatures are warm. Generally, mosquitoes come out during the cool hours of early morning and twilight. They avoid high humidity and bright sunlight. This is one of the reasons why they are found in wooded and shady areas. However, this does not mean you won’t encounter these disease-spreading pests during the day. If there is standing water around your property, chances are that there are mosquito larvae breeding in it.

Home Remedies that Work

Getting rid of mosquitoes can be difficult, but these home remedies may help to get the job done.

  1. Garlic.
Garlic has a strong smell which keeps bloodsuckers, including mosquitoes away. You need to crush a few garlic cloves and boil them in water. You can either let the smell waft around in your home, or you could fill the solution in a bottle and spray it around your home.
  1. Basil.
Basil works as a natural mosquito repellant. You can plant basil around your home to keep these pesky blood-sucking insects from invading your home. Make sure you plant a few around all windows. Basil doesn’t just keep the mosquitoes away, but can also help treat mosquito bites.
  1. Cloves and Lemon.
Cloves and lemon is a powerful combination to keep mosquitoes away. Cut the lemons in half and press cloves into the outer skin. Make sure you plant at least 10 cloves in each half. Place these lemons around your home. This should help keep mosquitoes at bay.
  1. Remove Excess Water or Debri.
As mosquitoes only need about a cap-full of water to lay their eggs, you will want to remove any excess standing water around your house and yard. Standing water can be created in the gutters around your home from leaves and other debri clogging them.
